Proudly, we celebrate Steve's accomplishments as the most decorated International athlete (all sports combined) in the history of North Bay! When Steve was a young boy, he spent most of his time at the ski hill. As he grew a little older, his freestyle ski coach decided that a gymnastics program - particularly trampoline and mini trampoline - would greatly benefit the members of his young aerials ski team - all of which were hungry for a challenge. The coach's choice to enhance his aerials program with a gymnastics component certainly paid off. Steve's early exposure to trampolines, foam pits and gymnastics coaching by national level gym coaches, most definitely gave him an edge later in his athletic career. Performing complex aerials, regardless of sport, requires a great deal of 'Air Sense' which can only develop with repetition. Performing these numbers in a safe setting allows the athlete to get better faster. In his early twenties, Steve quickly moved up the ski ranks...qualified for the Canadian National Team and began winning on the World circuit. During his climb to the top of the world, and even as he became one of the most decorated athletes in his sport, he always found time to 'hang out' and bounce at Gymtrix whenever he could.....It was always a fun training day for our national level gymnasts when Steve was in town, and at the gym doing multiple flips and twists with them. A true ambassador for all sports and an advocate for all active children, Steve also found time to make special appearances for the school children visitng Gymtrix. Those who visit Gymtrix today can view Steve Omischl's winners bib from a 2004 World Cup competition. Most recently, the City of North Bay announced that a new six field sports complex has been named in his honour ....and most certainly well deserved!
"Agreat deal of the training for Aerials takes place on trampoline. I spend many hours performing thousands of repetitions on trampoline before ever attempting a new skill on the water ramp and before ever performing it on the ski hill. Why is trampoline such an important component of my training?...I can do more reps, make both minor and major corrections and improve my overall air sense. Thanks to the gang at Gymtrix, I know that I always have a first class facility to train in when I am back home in North Bay." Steve Omischl
Robyn is a former national level athlete from Gymtrix who was coached by Bill Rhoads and Nicki Chretien. Robyn's gymnastics career with us spanned almost a decade and in 2004, Robyn finished on the podium as a member of Team Ontario in Las Vegas, Nevada - bringing home several medals. This email was received from Robyn who was currently away at University - in May 2010 (right before our move to Ferris Drive)...
"Congratulations on the new building! I can only imagine what you two must be going through right now with Sunshine Classic in a couple of weekends, and a move on the horizon. If only all the young gymnasts understood the expertise, dedication and heart you both put into the sport and the service you provide the City of North Bay and the greater gymnastics community. We really appreciate it and will be forever grateful!" Robyn Grigg (Hon) BSc. Kinesiology / Msc. Occupational Therapy (Candidate)
